6 Totally Fun and Kid-Friendly DIY Menorahs to Make This Hanukkah

A few days ago as I started to plan my annual Hanukkah party, I realized this year is going to be a lot different from all the others because this year, I have a KID! And since my husband and I have chosen to raise our son in a dual-faith household, I want to make damn sure that Hanukkah doesn’t get completely overshadowed by Christmas each year. That means it’s time to set some traditions and the first item on my list? The menorah!

Since the only menorah I’ve been using for the past several years is a cheap, last-minute drugstore find with wax all over it, I decided that this year, I’m gonna up my menorah game. And rather than splurging on something fancy, I thought it would be fun to try and build my own menorahs out of GoldieBlox toy pieces. I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun at work. I mean, is this really my job?!?

At my upcoming Hanukkah party, I plan on displaying these menorahs in the living room and leaving a big tub of GoldieBlox pieces for the kids to play with. I guarantee the parents will kvell over what they’ve invented. Take THAT, Christmas!

DIY Menorah

#1 “Play on Tradition” Menorah

I love how playful this menorah is. It looks simple, but it was actually quite the challenge figuring out how to line up all the “flexi-axles” to create these curves. I had a lot of fun doing it though, and once I was able to get everything to fit, I was so excited I felt like I’d solved a puzzle. Perhaps the biggest “aha!” was finding these candles that not only matched color-wise but fit perfectly into the holes!

What you need to make it: Craft-struction Box, Go Overboard Expansion Pack, Connect-the-Blox Expansion Pack, Axle-ent Axles Expansion Pack, Caspari candles

Level of difficulty: Advanced

Build time: 15 minutes

#2 “Fun with Geometry” Menorah

Step aside, I.M. Pei, this geometric menorah is an architectural marvel! Ok, so maybe that statement was a *tad* overblown, but I really like how cool and modern this came out! The GoldieBlox axles come in a variety of lengths – mini, short, regular, long and extra-long – but if you want even more options, you could easily use wooden dowels from any craft or hardware store.

What you need to make it: Craft-struction Box, Connect-the-Blox Expansion Pack, Axle-ent Axles Expansion Pack, Goodlight candles

Level of difficulty: Moderate

Build time: 15 minutes

Age: 7+

#3 “Her Royal Highness” Menorah

This classic shape was very easy to put together and I love the purple and gold color theme. I used the large wheel hubs and small wheel hubs at the base so that there would be enough weight down at the bottom to keep it *somewhat* sturdy. Another cool feature about this menorah that you can’t tell from the picture is that it spins!

What you need to make it: Craft-struction Box, Big Dipper Wax Works Candles

Level of difficulty: Moderate

Build time: 10 minutes

Age: 6+

#4 “Secret Garden” Menorah

This adorable menorah is perfect for beginner builders and it holds together really well. I added the pink spacers to look like flowers and chose pink and purple candles to give it a happy, springtime feel.

What you need to make it: Connect-the-Blox Expansion Pack, Axle-ent Axles Expansion Pack, Goodlight candles

Level of difficulty: Easy

Build time: 5 minutes

Age: 4+
DIY Menorah#5 “Tree of Life” Menorah

The mother of all menorahs, this one steals the show. I had so much fun bending the “flexi-axles” in different ways to create these organic shapes. I could have kept going and going, but then this menorah would have been the size of a car! I decided to give this one a more sophisticated look by spray painting the entire thing in metallic gold. I love it so much I reinforced all the connection points with a bit of super glue because I never plan on taking this thing apart!

What you need to make it: Craft-Struction Box, Connect-the-Blox Expansion Pack, Axle-ent Axles Expansion Pack, Caspari candles, Gold spray paint

Level of difficulty: Advanced

Build time: 15+ minutes

Age: 8+

#6 “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” Menorah

Last but not least, I think this one is my most creative feat! I love the retro vibe, the rainbow colors, and the out-of-the-box shape. This one is fragile, so for all you engineers out there, let me know if you have any suggestions on how to reinforce it. Either way, it sure is pretty.

What you need to make it: (2) Craft-Struction Boxes, Cheerlites candles

Level of difficulty: Advanced

Build time: 15+ minutes

Age: 8+

Well, I have to say I had fun at work today! It’s so cool to see what a wide variety of designs I was able to come up with by putting the GoldieBlox pieces together in different ways. It’s really infinite what you can create.

Oh, and before you go lighting them up and placing bets on which candle will last the longest, please use caution – the plastic is flammable and so is the spray paint. I would avoid lighting them entirely and just use them as decoration but if you do decide to give them a go, make sure to use drip-free candles, keep a close eye on them at all times and blow them out before the flames get anywhere near the plastic.

I feel very proud of these menorahs and I hope they inspire you and your budding engineers to try your own DIY menorahs at home. I’d love to see what you come up with, so please share your creations with me! Happy Hanukkah!
